I've been reading about Lincoln now for well over a decade, beginning with a little known book by Dale Carnegie, Lincoln the Unknown.
Some accounts are better than others, but amazingly, with each addition I find new insights, different perspectives, and fresh evidence for why Abraham Lincoln is and will likely remain the transcendent American president.
Here's a chronological list of my explorations to date:
Lincoln the Unknown, Dale Carnegie
Lincoln, David Herbert Donald
Famous Statements, Speeches & Stories of Abraham Lincoln, ed. J. Donald Hawkins
Honor's Voice: The Transformation of Abraham Lincoln, Douglas L. Wilson
Lincoln's Virtues: An Ethical Biography, William Lee Miller
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America, Allen C. Guelzo
Lincoln's Melancholy: How Depression Challenged a President and Fueled His Greatness, Joshua Wolf Shenk
The Words of Abraham Lincoln, ed. Martin Lubrin
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, Doris Kearns Goodwin
A. Lincoln: A Biography, Ronald C. White, Jr.
